Tech:NYC Digest: September 29

Friday, September 29, 2023

We’re back with another Friday edition of the Tech:NYC Digest, featuring our top five highlights in New York tech this week.

  • A technical glitch meant some Digest readers didn’t get yesterday’s edition in their inboxes. Our apologies. If you’d like to catch up, find it here.

🗽 One plug: Our 2023 Tech Summit is less than two weeks away! Altana AI CEO Evan Smith, CLEAR CEO Caryn Seidman-Becker, Google Head of Trust & Safety David Graff, US Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, and many others will be there on October 11. We hope you’ll join us!

Air Force Receives Its First Electric Air Taxi (New York Times)

  • On the heels of Climate Week NYC, Joby (a Tech:NYC member!) delivered the Air Force’s first electric passenger aircraft. Last year, the aviation startup announced a major partnership with Delta to soon offer home-to-airport transportation services using its eVTOLs, starting with service at JFK. This follow-up with the Air Force is a key opportunity to continue testing the technology in real-world situations, a major step in preparing it for commercial use.

Alphasense, an AI-based market intel firm, snaps up $150M at a $2.5B valuation (TechCrunch)

  • It was a busy week for AI funding, and leading the pack was NYC-based market intelligence startup Alphasense’s Series E. The round comes less than six months after it raised a $100 million round, and the company says its 4,000+ enterprise customers now cover the majority of the S&P 500.

The hottest 50 startups in the US, according to LinkedIn (Fast Company)

  • The list includes 15 NYC HQ’d companies, and the top spot this year went to Ramp (a Tech:NYC member)! We can’t say we’re surprised.

Light-Drenched Offices Fill the Shell of Domino Sugar (New York Magazine)

  • The reinvention of the Domino Sugar Refinery along the East River in Williamsburg is a masterclass in adaptive reuse. The original building essentially serves as a historic screen around the new, all-electric-powered office building with a glass dome penthouse. The Tech:NYC team visited the new space this week, and we can confirm: It’s a major feat that ensures an iconic NYC landmark remains a vibrant part of the city’s infrastructure.

What to See on (and Off) (and Off-Off) Broadway (Vulture)

  • The start of the fall theatre season is as packed as ever. (Our in-house critic – that would be Tyler – reports Merrily We Roll Along and Infinite Life are not to be missed.)
