Tech:NYC Digest: May 28

Friday, May 28, 2021Programming note: Today we’re sending out just a handful of updates because, let’s be honest, we’re pretty much all in holiday mode already, right? We’ll be closed on Monday for Memorial Day. Have a great long weekend, the digest will be back on Tuesday! Was this digest forwarded to you? Subscribe here.

We’re heading into another pandemic summer, but this time with a lot more optimism. (New York Times)

  • The official start of the season kicks off with some great news on the COVID front: the latest daily statewide positivity rate is just 0.59 percent, the lowest since the pandemic began. (NYS)

  • With lower case counts and more vaccinations, the Memorial Day holiday might just be the first time we see a big wave of travel in more than a year — that is, if the weather cooperates.

    • Especially with most restrictions lifted statewide, experts anticipate a major increase in travelers across the tri-state. To prepare, commuter rails are ramping up service, with both the LIRR adding express Hamptons service and the Metro-North adding trains. (NY1)

    • More weekend service updates from the MTA can be found here.

  • If you’re heading out to the beaches or parks, you’ll see mobile vaccination buses offering free COVID-19 vaccinations. (CNN) You’ll find them parked at spots in Brighton Beach, the Rockaways, Brooklyn Bridge Park, Central Park, and Governors Island, among others. A full list of mobile vaccination sites can be found here.

And one last thing before you scoot out of your inbox: Today is the last day to register to vote in the June 22 primaries.

  • If you’re a new voter or have recently moved, complete or update your registration here. (And remember: you must register with a political party to vote in their primary election.)

  • If you’re an existing voter, it’s still a good idea to confirm your registration status here.

  • If you want to vote via absentee ballot, make sure you request the ballot no later than June 15 here.
