12 ways to commemorate Juneteenth in New York City (Gothamist)

  • Juneteenth, the federal holiday coming up on Monday, commemorates the day in 1865 when federal troops informed enslaved Black Americans in Galveston, Texas, that the Civil War had ended and they were free – more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was enacted. Institutions and communities throughout the city are using the holiday and the preceding weekend to honor Black history and culture.  

Early voting in New York City: What you need to know (NY1)

  • The June primary election has arrived, with early voting kicking off Saturday and running every day until Sunday, June 25. Primary Election Day is Tuesday, June 27.

NYC places second on global ranking of tech ecosystems (Startup Genome

  • The city’s thriving startup ecosystem is valued at around $147 billion, with more than 25,000 tech-enabled startups supported by over 200 coworking spaces and 100 accelerators and incubators. The city also ranks #3 among U.S. states in foreign direct investment jobs.

Google to spend $12M on cybersecurity research at CUNY, NYU, Columbia and Cornell (Crain’s New York Business

  • Four New York universities will launch cybersecurity research projects over the next three years to develop new technology to keep people and businesses safe online and to bolster the local cybersecurity ecosystem. Google is funding the program with $12 million, part of a $10 billion cybersecurity initiative the company launched in 2021. The City University of New York, Columbia University, Cornell University and New York University will each get $1 million for research projects each year for the next three years.

  • Coney Island will be full of sparkles and sea creatures, thanks to the Mermaid Parade this Saturday. Organizers expect more than 3,000 marchers and hundreds of thousands of spectators to attend the event, now in its 41st year.
