NY to invest in ‘green chips’ manufacturing, expected to create hundreds of new jobs (Staten Island Advance)
Gov. Kathy Hochul today signed the Green CHIPS bill into law, and with the recently-signed federal CHIPS and Science Act, it unlocks groundbreaking resources to situate New York as the new nationwide hub for semiconductor manufacturing. Even better, in our view, is that it’s not only a manufacturing bill — it’s a climate bill and an economic growth bill. The commitments it makes to clean energy infrastructure and new job creation go far beyond what we’ve seen anywhere else.
Global unicorns flock to New York over Silicon Valley (Startup Genome)
NYC and Silicon Valley have been in a friendly tug-of-war for several years for the top two spots in Startup Genome’s annual Global Startup Ecosystem Ranking. More than a hundred cities were home to new unicorns last year, but a new analysis tracking those that choose to move their HQs shows NYC is the place to be. Of the ones that moved, 50% chose to plant roots in New York. (A smart move, in our definitely-not-biased opinion.)
PreciTaste lands funding for tech that checks restaurant orders for accuracy (TechCrunch)
First of all, for all of us who’ve ever accepted a food delivery only to realize it’s not what you ordered, an AI-powered app that checks for that before it leaves the kitchen sounds very useful. Second, it was New York’s largest venture round this week with $24 million in new funding. Besides that, New York startups raised another $38.2 million in funding this week, and interestingly, they were all seed rounds. Throughout 2021, it seemed like much of the new deal flow was larger rounds to later-stage companies, but this adds evidence that what Primary noticed about Q2 in New York could be a trend that sticks around.
Tech Year NYC: An NFT Gallery (Tech:NYC)
We’re wrapping up the final week on our #TechYearNYC summer pilot for students interested in careers in tech. Along the way, we’ve also been partnering with Primitives and a group of NYC artists to create custom NFTs each week for the students to take with them. We just dropped them all on a gallery page and in this thread. A big thank you to all the artists, industry and city partners, and volunteers who helped make Tech Year NYC a success!
Westworld Has Become West Side World (New York Magazine)
This is what happens when you take present-day New York, add artificial consciousness, and fast-forward in time to the late 21st century…
PS: Early voting for the August 23 primary election begins this weekend! But remember, your early voting site may not be the same as your Election Day site. Confirm your location here.
