Tech:NYC Member Updates: Welcome to Q4!

Welcome to Q4! It was a busy summer for Tech:NYC – but we’re not slowing down. We wanted to take this opportunity to share with our members some updates on what we’ve been up to:

Last month,

. The new board is a group of 60 top founders, investors, and other New York tech leaders, and we couldn’t be more excited to work with them to help guide the organization and the broader tech community through a crucial next phase of growth.

Earlier this summer, we were proud to host a cornerstone event with Senate Majority Leader (and Brooklyn’s own) Chuck Schumer and IBM CEO Arvind Krishna. At the event, Sen. Schumer discussed his plan for nine

to bring federal legislators up to speed on all things AI. Tech:NYC continues to engage closely with his office, as well as city and state policymakers, on this topic – if your startup is building in the AI space,

so we make sure to get you involved!

This month, there’s plenty to look forward to:

New York Tech Week

, the second edition of the

Tech:NYC Founder House

, our

2023 Tech Summit

with Crain’s New York, and more! We’re also putting the final touches on new research tracking New York tech hiring and talent trends.

You’ll start getting these membership roundups on a monthly basis; in the interim, you know where to find us!

🗽 FOR THE POLICY WONKS Tech:NYC stays in close conversation with city and state policymakers on both active and proposed legislation impacting tech companies and their employees. We’ve recently submitted official testimony to three hearings:

  • NYC Council Committees on Education and Technology’s hearing on AI and computer instruction in public schools. Our testimony.

  • NYC Taxi & Limousine Commission’s Green Rides Initiative increasing the electric for-hire-vehicle fleet. Our testimony.

  • NYC Dept. of Transportation’s proposed rules on cargo e-bikes. Our testimony.

The policy team has kept a busy calendar of meetings to connect elected officials to our members – we’ve recently hosted roundtables with New York Lieutenant Governor Antonio Delgado, NYC Council Member Erik Bottcher, and NYC Council candidate Yusef Salaam.

  • We also partnered with Coinbase to kick off their national “Stand with Crypto” tour from right here in New York, with remarks from Assembly Member Clyde Vanel, Council Member Jennifer Gutiérrez, Policy Director to the Governor Micah Lasher, and others.

Will we see you at Somos Puerto Rico? For this year’s conference in San Juan, presented annually by the New York State Assembly/Senate Puerto Rican & Hispanic Task Force, we’re bringing a group of Latino startup founders to present a panel on expanding tech industry opportunities for the Latino community. Tech:NYC will also host its own tech happy hour.

  • Let us know if you are interested in expanding your company’s presence at Somos as a sponsor of our tech happy hour.

  • Let us know if anyone from your company is planning to attend!

Opportunities to engage in Q4: Keep an eye out for invitations to a few upcoming events for policy and government affairs leads, including:

  • On 10/12: A joint dinner roundtable with Miguelina Camilo, Counsel to the NYS Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie and Eric Katz, Counsel to the NYS Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins.

  • On 10/24: A happy hour with Tech:NYC member policy leads and local elected officials.

🚀 FOR THE NEXT-GEN STARTUP FOUNDERSWe’re ironing out the final details for the Cohort 2 of the Tech:NYC Founder House, a special edition launching this month during New York Tech Week!

  • For Cohort 2, we doubled the amount of early-stage founders we could accept to 40, and we’re putting together curated itineraries of meetings, lunches, and working sessions with top NYC investors and other industry leaders.

We opened Founder House for the first cohort in July, in partnership with WeWork, and for Cohort 2, we’re excited to expand that partnership and bring in a roster of even more great industry leaders: Eniac Ventures, Carta, Thoropass, Justworks, Innovatemap, and more.

  • There’s still time to get involved! If you or others at your company are interested in sponsoring the House or activating programming for the founders that week, or in future iterations, let us know

Alongside our events, a lot of the work we do for the startup ecosystem happens behind the scenes, especially when we connect startups with local government. Does your startup have a big win to share? We hope you’ll keep us in the loop!

📰 TECH:NYC IN THE NEWS

  • This op-ed, co-authored by two Julies! (our president Julie Samuels and New York League of Conservation Voters president Julie Tighe) argues that NYC can accelerate EV adoption – and the infrastructure we need to make it possible – by prioritizing support for the city’s for-hire vehicle fleet.
