Tech:NYC Member Updates: October 2023

It was a big — and very busy — month for New York tech! First, we were excited to gather our newly-expanded Board for the first time (and a huge thanks to Gov. Kathy Hochul for joining us)!We hosted a successful Tech Summit in partnership with Crain’s New York and a whirlwind of events during New York Tech Week. There were 420+ events across the city throughout the week, making it the largest Tech Week to date (👀, SF and LA). You can get our recap here, but a real highlight for me was our Founder House — we welcomed Cohort 2 for a special #NYTechWeek edition of the House that became a revolving door of founders, investors, elected officials, and other tech leaders equally committed to New York’s tech community.Needless to say, the startup ecosystem in New York is as active and engaged as ever. I’m excited to carry this energy through the rest of the year and into 2024. We look forward to staying in touch; as always, if we can be helpful to you and your colleagues, you know where to find us! – JuliePresident & Executive DirectorPS: It’s early voting week in NYC, and election day is Nov. 7. Make sure you get to the polls!
📎 OUR LATEST RESEARCHThis month we released the latest edition of our annual tech talent survey in partnership with Accenture. The survey of 350 C-suite executives — all based in NYC and working across several industries — identifies current hiring trends and efforts to fill talent gaps with the local workforce.
Among the highlights:
Tech talent is top of mind for New York companies looking to hire – with more than half (59%) planning to increase the number of tech talent in 2023.
Nearly all survey respondents (99%) are confident their organization will be able to secure the tech skills they need in 2023 from the talent pool in New York City.
The top three most in-demand tech skills business leaders are looking for are cloud (78%), security (77%) and AI (75%). They also expect the most difficulty in hiring talent with expertise in these areas.
As we look ahead to 2024, we are excited to increase our civic engagement, workforce, and volunteer opportunities through the Tech:NYC Foundation (a 501c3). If you or your company is interested in becoming more involved in this work, collaborating on initiatives, or supporting it with philanthropic dollars, please get in touch here.
🗽 FOR THE POLICY WONKSTech:NYC stays in close conversation with city and state policymakers on both active and proposed legislation impacting tech companies and their employees. Here’s some of the officially testimony and other statements we’ve made this month:
NYC Council hearing on lithium ion battery and e-bike safety, as the City Council considers new requirements for delivery platforms to provide batteries and equipment to delivery workers. Our testimony.
NYC Mayor Eric Adam’s newly-released AI Action Plan, outlining key frameworks for how city government uses AI. Our quote.
The policy team has kept a busy calendar of meetings and events to connect elected officials to our members – this month we’ve hosted meet & greets with:
Miguelina Camilo and Eric Katz, the lead Counsels for the state Assembly Speaker and state Senate Majority Leader; Council Member Erik Bottcher, Assembly Member Clyde Vanel, and representatives from Empire State Development's New York Ventures in the Tech:NYC Founder House; and state Assembly Member Alex Bores and New York State's first-ever Chief Customer Experience Officer Tonya Webster.
On 10/26, we collaborated on a forum with the NYU Law School’s Information Law Institute to discuss the community impacts of child data privacy laws and social media regulations.
Our thoughts on current local proposals on this topic were covered by the New York Times, New York Daily News, and others.
Will we see you at Somos Puerto Rico? The Tech:NYC team will be on the ground for this year’s conference in San Juan, and we’re bringing a group of Latino startup founders to present a panel on expanding tech industry opportunities for the Latino community. Tech:NYC will also host its own reception.
Let us know if you are interested in expanding your company’s presence at Somos as a sponsor of our tech happy hour — or if anyone from your company is planning to attend!
🚀 FOR THE NEXT-GEN STARTUP FOUNDERSThe special #NYTechWeek edition of the Tech:NYC Founder House was a big success! Read our recap of the week here. We’re already working on Cohort 3 of Founder House, expected to open its doors mid-Q1.
If you’re a NYC-based founder who could benefit from a workspace and curated access to investors, industry experts, and other early-stage founders, stay tuned for application details soon!
If you work at a company that may be interested in sponsoring the House or activating programming for the selected founders, let us know!
