New NYC anti-sexual harassment laws will impact your business

From time to time, we send alerts to our members to let you know when a new law may impact your business. This week, the NYC City Council passed new anti-sexual harassment laws that we expect Mayor de Blasio to sign into law in the next few weeks.Parts of this legislation will apply to all New York City employers. The "Stop Sexual Harassment in NYC Act" includes the following three provisions that will likely impact your business. First, starting April 1, 2019, if your company has 15 or more full-time employees, it will be required to conduct annual anti-sexual harassment training with every worker within 90 days of hiring. Second, you will need to display a poster in your workplace that outlines anti-sexual harassment rights and responsibilities, and this goes into effect 120 days after it becomes law. Third, New York City Human Rights Law is amended in relation to expanding sexual harassment protections to all employees regardless of the number of employees (previously protections did not apply if an employer had less than four employees), and this goes into effect immediately. Please note: The legislation includes 11 separate bills, many of which don’t apply to the private sector.
