New York tech in the Times, Post, and Daily News
New York tech in the Times, Post, and Daily News

Happy new year! Yesterday there were three stories — one in each of NYC’s major daily papers — that reminded us of the what and why of Tech:NYC.First, the New York Times ran a front page story that took a deeper look at NYC’s recent tech boom, noting that “[t]ech companies are choosing New York to tap into its deep and skilled talent pool and to attract employees who prefer the city’s diverse economy over technology-dominated hubs on the West Coast.”Second, the New York Post dug into the six “hottest jobs” in 2020, all of which are in tech. Much of the City’s job growth is driven by tech companies large and small, all of which “hire both technical and nontechnical workers, ranging from developers to accountants to digital marketers and salespeople.”Finally, an oped in the Daily News from our Executive Director, Julie Samuels, looks ahead to the debate around worker classification taking place in Albany. As she wrote there, New York has a real opportunity in 2020 to protect workers, while ensuring platform companies can continue offering innovative services New Yorkers who rely on them.Taken together, these pieces serve as a reminder of why an organization like Tech:NYC needs to exist — as our tech ecosystem here continues to grow, there will be discussion and, yes, debates about its impact on our city and the people who call it home. We look forward to those debates and to ensuring that as tech grows in New York, it does so in a way that best reflects everything we love the most about our City.In case you missed it, click here to read our 2019 annual report.
