Update on today’s immigration news from the Supreme Court
Update on today’s immigration news from the Supreme Court | View Web Version

As you’ve probably seen by now, today the U.S. Supreme Court issued a partial stay of the various federal court decisions enjoining President Trump’s "travel ban" executive order, pending a full decision later this year. You can read our updated Policy Brief on the issue here. The Court partially granted the government’s request for a stay of the lower court injunctions by limiting the effect of the government’s temporary ban to immigrants and refugees “who lack any bona fide relationship with a person or entity in the United States.” In other words, as the Court explained, foreign nationals from the six majority-Muslim countries coming to the U.S. for business, to visit family, or to attend school are not affected by the ban. Given that refugees are less likely to have existing connections to the United States, it goes without saying that the Supreme Court’s decision impacts the refugee population more than immigrants. We continue to see this ban as both unconstitutional and bad policy for our nation and its economy, for immigrants and refugees alike. And, we’re concerned that the partial stay could keep out the future founders and job creators whom we most want to attract to the United States. Many of the biggest employers and most successful companies in America were started by immigrants who had no prior ties to the U.S. While it’s easy to conjure fears of the unknown, it’s harder to see what we lose if families of the next immigrant tech founders like Sergey Brin or Andy Grove aren’t allowed into the U.S.We will keep you updated on opportunities to be heard and active on the issue. We are closely following the litigation and the resulting debates. Thanks for all of your help thus far, and we will count on you to be a part of the effort going forward.
