The Latest in New York

The latest: State infection rate at lowest since pandemic outset; Gov. Cuomo to end daily briefing; NYC could enter Phase II this Monday; majority of CFOs concerned about second wave, PwC study finds.  Confirmed Cases: 

  • New York State: 385,142 (+567)

  • New York City: 210,941 (+350)

  • Statewide Fatalities: 24,629 (+17)

  • Daily NYC Infection Rate: 1.2 percent (no change)

General Updates:

  • Yesterday, New York conducted almost 60,000 tests statewide, and less than one percent returned positive results, the lowest rate the state has seen since the outbreak began. (CBS New York)

  • After 109 nearly continuous briefings and with New York’s coronavirus toll well past its peak, Gov. Cuomo plans to end his daily briefings on Friday, saying the state will “turn the page on the immediacy of this crisis.” (Spectrum News)

  • But as trends in New York have been a success, 21 other states are seeing upward trends in new confirmed cases after relaxing some restrictions. (CNN) The same is happening in reopened global hotspots like Beijing, which has reclosed its schools and is racing to contain a second wave of the virus. (CBS News

  • Gov. Cuomo today signed an executive order recognizing Juneteenth as a holiday for state employees. He also announced he is advancing legislation to make it an official state holiday beginning next year. (CNBC)

  • The NYPD will now be required to release body camera footage to the public within 30 days when an officer kills, shoots, or seriously injures someone. (POLITICO)

  • Gov. Cuomo is also signing legislation to grant whistleblower protections to healthcare workers who want to speak out about improper patient care or workplace safety. (WGRZ)

One good read: The high cost of panic-moving: fleeing a big city because of the pandemic is a bigger gamble than it might seem. (The Atlantic)

(Gothamist) While many New Yorkers are still wary of taking potentially crowded mass transit, experts are reporting more car buying activity in the NYC area than typical. What to Know: Reopening:

  • NYC is on track to move into Phase II of reopening on Monday, according to Gov. Cuomo. (New York Times) Mayor de Blasio has sounded a more cautious note, however, declining to put a specific date on entering Phase II. (NBC New York) So naturally, people are confused. (NY1)

  • Here’s a reminder of the industries that may reopen as part of Phase II, including offices, some outdoor dining, and hair salons.

  • The Mid-Hudson, Rockland, and Westchester regions will move to Phase III on Tuesday. (The Journal News) Long Island will move into Phase III on Wednesday. (Newsday)
