The first week of Phase III for NYC is in the books, and it looks like we made it through intact! Here’s another short summer Friday post to take you into you weekend:
A quick round of useful updates:
All large events requiring city permits will now be canceled through September 30 as the city works to prioritize open space for public use. (NY1) The mayor later clarified that Black Lives Matter marches, however, can continue. (New York Post)
If you have upcoming beach plans, a heads up: despite reopening for swimming last week, long stretches of shoreline remain off limits due to a lack of lifeguards, making it tough to socially distance where beaches are staffed and indeed open. (New York Post)
It seems like masks are here to stay, so you might as well double-down and make them fun while you’re at it. For the sustainable stylists, here’s eleven masks that both protect your neighbors and the planet. For the fashion-forward, check out Society6’s artist designed face coverings. (And as long as you’re protecting your face, consider protecting your stuff too with this apropos tote.)
Here’s a new, very helpful visualization of the percent change in daily cases since states began reopening. And the picture is grim: for the second time this week, the US reported a record single-day spike, topping 60,000 new cases. (CNBC) By letting the virus surge in many states with minimal public safety measures in place — not one state has ordered another lockdown — the US has unintentionally become a huge experiment in herd immunity. (Axios) In NYC, antibody test results suggest that, in places like Jackson Heights and Borough Park, as many as 70 percent of people have had the virus, inadvertently achieving a level of community protection. (City & State) But much more evidence is needed, and as Sweden’s response revealed, could come with deadly consequences. (New York Times)
